About Australian Income Tax & Medicare Levy Calculator

Australian Income Tax & Medicare Levy Calculator applies ATO progressive brackets and the Medicare levy to work out tax owed and take-home pay. Residents get the tax-free threshold on the first tranche of income; foreign residents get none and start paying from the first dollar, which is why the residency toggle changes results so sharply. The 2% Medicare levy is added on top, with its low-income phase-in modelled properly β€” below the lower threshold there is no levy, between the thresholds it phases in at ten cents in the dollar, and above the upper threshold the full 2% applies to all income. The tool also flags the Medicare Levy Surcharge as a warning where income exceeds the singles threshold and no private hospital cover is held, since that surcharge is a real additional cost that catches people out. Take-home pay is shown annually, monthly and fortnightly.

Key Features

  • Resident and Foreign Resident Rates

Separate bracket tables for each. Foreign residents get no tax-free threshold, which changes tax on modest incomes dramatically.

  • Medicare Levy Phase-In

Models the ten-cents-in-the-dollar phase-in between the low-income thresholds rather than applying a flat 2% to everyone.

  • Medicare Levy Surcharge Warning

Flags the surcharge when income exceeds the singles threshold with no private hospital cover, with an estimated amount.

  • Fortnightly Take-Home

Australian pay cycles are commonly fortnightly, so that figure is shown alongside annual and monthly.

  • Marginal Rate Display

Shows the bracket your last dollar sits in, which is what matters for overtime and second jobs.

  • Band-by-Band Table

Income and tax in each bracket including the tax-free tranche, so the progression is visible.

How to Use

  1. 1

    Enter your annual income

Use taxable income β€” assessable income less deductions.

  2. 2

    Select your residency status

Australian resident for tax purposes, or foreign resident. This is a tax concept, not a visa status.

  3. 3

    Set your private cover status

Untick if you have no private hospital cover, so the Medicare Levy Surcharge warning can apply.

  4. 4

    Read tax and take-home pay

Check total tax, take-home pay and the effective rate in the summary cards.

  5. 5

    Review the breakdown

See income tax and Medicare levy separately, plus monthly and fortnightly take-home figures.
