About Credit Card Payoff Calculator
Credit Card Payoff Calculator amortizes a card balance at monthly APR and tells you the two things that matter: how long it takes and what the interest costs. Work from a fixed monthly payment to get a payoff date, or from a target payoff date to get the required payment — both directions are supported. What sets this apart is the explicit minimum-payment trap warning: when your payment is at or below one month’s interest accrual, the balance never falls, and the tool says so directly rather than producing a nonsense 500-month schedule. The first month’s interest is always displayed, because seeing that a $6,000 balance at 22.9% costs over $110 in interest before a dollar touches principal is usually what prompts action. A full month-by-month schedule shows interest, principal and remaining balance throughout.
Key Features
Minimum-Payment Trap Warning
Detects when your payment does not exceed monthly interest and says the balance will never clear. Most calculators just return an absurd timeline.
Two Solve Directions
Enter a payment to get the payoff date, or a target date to get the required payment. Both are common ways of framing the same problem.
First-Month Interest Shown
Displays what interest costs before any principal is touched. The single most motivating number on the page.
Principal vs Interest Split
Totals show how much of everything you pay is principal and how much is pure interest cost.
Full Payment Schedule
Scrollable month-by-month table with interest, principal and balance for every payment.
Monthly APR Compounding
Uses APR divided by twelve on the outstanding balance, matching how card issuers actually accrue interest.
How to Use
- 1
Enter your balance and APR
Use the current statement balance and the purchase APR shown on it. Cash advance APRs are usually higher.
- 2
Choose how to solve
Pick fixed payment to find the payoff date, or target months to find the payment required.
- 3
Enter the payment or timeline
Try your current payment first to see the baseline, then increase it.
- 4
Check the trap warning
If the warning appears, your payment is at or below monthly interest and must increase before any progress is possible.
- 5
Review the schedule
Open the month-by-month table to see how long interest dominates each payment.
Real-World Use Cases
Payoff Reality Check
Someone paying the minimum on a $6,000 balance sees the true timeline and interest cost, and doubles their payment.
Deadline Planning
A cardholder who wants to be clear in 18 months uses target mode to find the exact monthly payment required.
Balance Transfer Evaluation
A borrower compares total interest at their current APR against a 0% promotional period plus transfer fee.
